Aikido is a martial art, founded in Japan, that has expanded to countries all over the world. It uses joint locks, throws, and pins to neutralize an attack. It is a defensive martial art, but can be aggressive as well. Aikido's founder was Morehei Ueshiba (1883-1969), a consummate martial artist who, after a lifetime of studying and teaching many different martial skills, had a vision of the martial arts as a source of life rather than death. That vision became Aikido.
